(By Dr. Suresh Kumar, Senior Scientist, MSc, PhD, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi)
1. Know the Relevant Disciplines and Syllabus
The Social Science group primarily includes:
Agricultural Economics
Agricultural Extension
Go through the latest ICAR PG syllabus carefully. Key focus areas include farm economics, production economics, agri-policy, rural development, extension education, communication methods, diffusion of innovation, and government schemes.
2. Understand the Exam Pattern and Strategy
The exam consists of 120 MCQs to be solved in 120 minutes.
Questions test both theoretical understanding and application-based knowledge.
Prioritise understanding definitions, principles, institutions, and real-world agricultural applications.
3. Refer to Standard Books and Trusted Study Material
For Agricultural Economics:
List Provided in SRBs.
For Agricultural Extension:
List Provided in SRBs.
4. Create a Practical and Balanced Study Schedule
Design a monthly plan covering all syllabus units.
Daily routine: 3–4 hours for theory topics, 1 hour for revision, and 30 minutes for MCQs.
Rotate subjects weekly — e.g., Week 1: Extension Philosophy and Methods, Week 2: Micro and Macro Economics, and so on.
5. Solve MCQs and Past Year Papers
Practise questions from ICAR-JRF question banks, model test papers, and previous 5–10 years’ exams.
Focus on repeated patterns, factual data, thinkers (like Rogers, Freire), and acts/policies.
Maintain a notebook of important facts and tricky questions for last-minute revision.
6. Make Short Notes and Revision Sheets
Prepare summary tables and flashcards for topics such as:
Extension approaches, models, communication types
Market structure, elasticity, farm budgeting tools
Agricultural policies, five-year plans, and rural credit systems
Revise each topic at least 2–3 times before the exam.
7. Take Regular Mock Tests
Weekly full-length mock tests are essential for real-time practice.
Use OMR sheets and timers to simulate actual conditions.
After each test, review mistakes, and revise the weak areas immediately.
8. Learn from Toppers and Subject Experts
Watch topper interviews and expert lectures on YouTube for insights into time management, resource selection, and smart revision tips.
Use revision series or short summary classes available through online platforms dedicated to ICAR PG preparation.
9. Be Updated with Agricultural Schemes and Policies
For Extension and Economics, current government schemes (like PM-KISAN, e-NAM, SHC, RKVY) and agricultural policies are commonly asked.
Stay updated with agricultural budget highlights, socio-economic data, and rural development programmes.
10. Stay Positive and Consistent
Keep a healthy routine with proper sleep, meals, and mental breaks.
Avoid last-minute overload—use last 2 weeks only for revising notes, flashcards, and mock test review.
Stay motivated and confident. Discipline and consistency are the key ingredients of success.
